The League of American Bicyclists has recognized Modern Woodmen of America with a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) award.

The Rock Island-based fraternal financial services organization joins a total of 1,358 BFBs nationwide, ranging from government agencies, Fortune 500 companies and museums to hospitality establishments, bike shops and other employers committed to transforming American workplaces to be more welcoming to both customers and employees who bike. Modern Woodmen is the first business in the Illinois Quad Cities to receive the designation and joins three other Quad Cities businesses in earning the designation.

"At the heart of every new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Business is a commitment to something greater – community, sustainability and well-being, to name a few.” said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “We’re proud to celebrate Modern Woodmen for their ongoing efforts to champion cycling both within their workplace and in the world around them."

Modern Woodmen encourages bicycling through its support of an employee cycling club and bicycle-friendly infrastructure improvements. The organization recently completed a new bike area that includes a bike rack, commercial-grade bike repair and maintenance station, storage lockers, shared equipment, and a map of bicycle trails in the Quad Cities metro area.

“Biking brings many benefits to our employees, our organization and the environment,” says Jerry Lyphout, Modern Woodmen’s president and CEO. “Supporting a bike-friendly environment improves employees’ health and wellness, positions us as a forward-thinking employer to attract top talent, helps us minimize our environmental impact, and better connects us to our community.”

Modern Woodmen employee Morgan Milner regularly makes his commute to work via bicycle. “The improvements are really fantastic,” he says. “It’s great having a covered, secure place to park my bike, with tools and a pump if I need them. I’m thrilled to work for an organization that understands how valuable biking can be both for its employees and the community at large.”

As part of the BFB network, Modern Woodmen will have access to a variety of tools and technical assistance from the league to become even more welcoming to people who bike. To learn more about the BFB program, or to apply, visit the League online at bikeleague.org/business.
