Modern Woodmen of America, Rock Island, Illinois, has appointed Sandra L. Stosz, Falmouth, Massachusetts, to its board of directors. Stosz fills the director position vacated upon the retirement of Sam H. Kupresin, Bettendorf, Iowa, at the end of last year.

During a 40-year career, retired U.S. Coast Guard Vice Admiral Sandra Stosz was the first woman to command an icebreaker on the Great Lakes and to lead a U.S. armed forces service academy. She served at sea for 12 years, commanding two ships and finishing her career as the first woman assigned as Deputy Commandant for Mission Support, directing one of the Coast Guard’s largest enterprises.

In addition to a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Stosz holds an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and a Master of National Security Strategy degree from the National War College. She’s the author of “Breaking Ice and Breaking Glass: Leading in Uncharted Waters,” and a leadership speaker who’s been featured on CSPAN and many other media outlets.

Headquartered in Rock Island, Illinois, Modern Woodmen was founded in 1883 as a fraternal benefit society. The organization supports members, families and communities with a unique blend of financial services, fraternal programs and local-impact opportunities.
